Sculptural piece exploring interplay of organic and industrial materials

December 2019

Materials:

  • Cottonwood root

  • recycled cast glass

This sculpture explores the interplay between the organic and the industrial, merging the flowing cottonwood root with a cast glass block to create a seamless dialogue between textures and forms. While the cottonwood exudes warmth and comfort, the glass offers a cold, forbidding, counterpoint, evoking a tension that underscores their shared transformation. The form, reminiscent of a phantom, embodies ephemerality and presence, while the visual movement cascades downward like a waterfall, inviting the viewer to meditate on the forces of time and erosion. Through this work, I aim to draw attention to the harmony and contrast inherent in these two materials, highlighting the fragility and resilience of both nature and human creation over time.
